Which shows deserve to return this fall?

Posted on Fri Apr 16 2010

Chuck

It's that time of year again, with the upfront just around the corner and the networks looking ahead to their fall programming schedules. Here are my best bets for which shows return and which don't.
Let's start with NBC's Chuck, the most deserving renewal of all shows on the bubble. It's winding up season 3 in strong fashion, and is one of the most consistently entertaining programs on television (think Alias with a sense of humor). As predicted earlier in this space, Chuck lives to see season 4.
As for other NBC decisions: Law & Order and Parenthood return, while Heroes, Mercy and Trauma are history.
Unlike NBC, Fox doesn't have many tough calls. Odds are Human Target gets renewed, as a potential replacement for the exiting 24. Lie to Me hangs on as well, while Sons of Tucson fades away (not that anyone will notice).
Things are a little more complicated over at CBS, which is surprising for such a consistent network. Surely its biggest concern is the future of Two and a Half Men: My bet is they get Charlie Sheen to sign on for at least as many episodes as it takes to properly close out the hit comedy. Most of CBS's bubble shows seem to be on the wrong side of the fence. I'm guessing The New Adventures of Old Christine and Medium survive. Accidentally on Purpose, Gary Unmarried, Numbers and Cold Case are goners.
ABC recently renewed Castle, and has to decide whether Flash Forward and V are even a poor man's Lost. And the CW will inexplicably extend One Tree Hill. Like According to Jim for a younger demo, it's a show that refuses to die.
So, what's your take: which shows deserve saving, and which must go?
