'Modern Family' spot rules on Oscar night

Posted on Mon Mar 8 2010

I have one word for the network promos that ABC ran during last night's Oscar telecast: meatballs! Sorry, Alec and Steve, but the biggest laugh of the night, at least at my house, came from this Modern Family ad, where the cast played a game of Academy Award-themed charades. The ensemble from this Wednesday night sitcom can do no wrong in my book, but this spot was especially inspired. In the deft mini-character studies, Phil (Ty Burrell) spazzed out, Claire (Julie Bowen) rolled her eyes, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) needed a translator, Jay (Ed O'Neill) harrumphed, and tuxedoed Mitchell and Cameron (Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet) effortlessly made mincemeat out of everyone. If this doesn't make you want to watch the show, I don't know what would. It's just such a joy to watch another family's painful game night where someone thinks "the pointy finger" is actually a clue.
